Ligare is a Christian psychedelic society discerning how our faith and traditions may support the ethical and spiritually grounded use of psychedelics for the purpose of healing and renewal.
The Four Roots that Guide Our Work
Ligare draws on four roots of Christian faith and history that we tend together: the contemplative tradition, the dialogue between science and religion, our painful history with Indigenous peoples, and the mysteries at the heart of our tradition.
Science and Faith
The story that Christianity and science are at odds is common but not the dominant view for most of Christian history. We celebrate a tradition that has long valued reason and science, reflecting a well-ordered creation and a loving God. Now is the time to re-weave that narrative into complimentary ways of knowing. Our faith is always seeking understanding and our understanding helps inform how we live.
The Christian Contemplative Tradition
Our faith is rich with ways to encounter God beyond thought and word. From centering prayer and Lectio Divina to fasting, chant, and the laying on of hands, embodied practices that move us beyond our heads have been a part of every renewal movement in Christianity. As traditions across the church rediscover the contemplative, we find reliable wisdom from the ages and a wellspring for integrating psychedelic experiences.
The Mysteries of Our Faith
Many have experienced Christianity as dogmatic, rigid, or dry. Yet the great mysteries at its heart offer profoundly rich spiritual resources: the Trinity, the Creation, the Incarnation, the Death, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus, the church as the mystical body of Christ, and the communion of saints. They give us a language to support us in the wake of ineffable, challenging, or confusing journeys.
Christian-Indigenous History and Relations
Christianity's role in settler-colonialism and the destruction of Indigenous stewardship of plant medicine is the most painful root we must learn to tend, and the one that may offer the deepest healing. We cannot come into the psychedelic space respectfully without contending with our history. We have much to learn and unlearn as we repair harm and build reciprocity with Indigenous people and the land itself.

Members connect directly with faithful and thoughtful people discerning how our faith and traditions may support the ethical and spiritually grounded use of psychedelics for the sake of healing and renewal. They join monthly forums, integration groups, and book studies, and help guide the programs we offer.
